NFU Cymru is looking for proactive, enthusiastic young farmers to be part of a new intake for the Next Generation Group and Aberconwy MP Robin Millar is encouraging local farmers to apply.
Farmers aged 40 and under, from all sectors and from all counties of Wales are invited to apply to join the group and to represent the future of the industry. In addition to working with NFU Cymru Policy Advisers and officeholders, on key policy issues such as future food and farming policy, members of the group will also get the opportunity to meet with key figures within government and the agri-food supply chain.
Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the current group has been in place since 2018 so this will be the third intake, which usually has a two-year term. It provides an opportunity for young farmers to engage with top decision makers, as well as the opportunity to meet similar groups across the rest of the UK.
Speaking about the NFU’s search, Robin said: “Many of our farms throughout Aberconwy have been managed by the same family for generations. Their contribution to our communities (and our dinner plates!) is invaluable. From producing the finest lamb and beef to be found anywhere in the world to maintaining the natural beauty of the landscapes of Snowdonia, Aberconwy’s farmers’ skills and knowledge must be at the centre of agriculture decision making in Wales and throughout the UK.”
Continuing, Robin said: “I am deeply concerned about the misinformation circulating in relation to the impact of livestock farming on climate change. Wales is one of the most sustainable places on Earth to produce red meat and I hope that local farmers will use this as an opportunity to highlight our farmers’ contribution to limiting climate change and managing our natural environment.”
The group meets around four times a year to discuss key issues affecting young farmers. Speakers attend the meetings and discussions are held. Also, Covid-19 permitting, there are plans to visit both Cardiff Bay and Westminster to meet policy makers and to get to the heart of decision making for the Welsh agricultural industry.
It is also a great opportunity to learn more about the industry and the role of the union. The future of agriculture is dependent on good young farmers, driving forward innovation and improving competitiveness in each sector.
