Robin comments on his visit to the Curtis Cup, held in Conwy -
'It's the final day of the Curtis Cup today being hosted here at our very own Conwy Golf Club.
This is the top international showcase for women's amateur golf (the equivalent is the men's Walker [edited] Cup) and showcases the best of UK and US talent, right here in Aberconwy.
I visited earlier this week with Cllr Louise Emery, deputy leader of Conwy County Council who helped bring this event here.
We had a chance to meet Andrea the Ladies Club Captain and Matt the General Manager.
We discussed the covid preparations and the impact they have had on the event. We noted the importance of supporting infrastructure (parking, transputer, accommodation etc) for an event like this - things beyond the control of the club.
Driving it all is the international significance of this event in golfing, for women and also the club here in Conwy.
Players travel the world to play a round on the same courses their heroes do. Americans, for example, are used to travelling to Hoylake on the Wirral and so the challenge is to persuade them to travel an extra hour further along the coast - it has to be said, the weather has been terrific and is showing off the natural beauty, heritage and culture which form the stunning backdrop here (and should be enough to draw anyone!)
I also snatched a quick chat with Club Captain JR before he announced the tee off of two pairs at the first tee. I agreed to work with the club and encourage UK tourism to be a part of preparations for the next big tournament coming here in 2022 - the European Team Championships.
The DCMS team are on the case and the Secretary of State Oliver Dowden tweeted his support for the event earlier in the week. - "It's fantastic to see the Curtis Cup in full swing right in the heart of North Wales. This is a tremendous chance to promote Conwy Golf Club ahead of the European Team Championships in 2022, but also to showcase the UK as whole and the huge array of sporting resources we have."
