Janet Finch-Saunders – the Welsh Conservative candidate for Aberconwy – has this morning taken part in a husting event organised by the Food and Drink Federation Cymru. During the digital event, Janet highlighted the Welsh Conservatives’ five-point plan to champion Welsh food.
Under the plan, the Party would introduce community herb and vegetable gardens; develop orchards in open green spaces; invest in the development of the Welsh local food and drink sector; boost public procurement of items grown and their export overseas; and improve the shelf-life of Welsh lamb to increase its competitive edge.
Commenting on plans to support producers, Janet said:
“Welsh food and drink is known the world over for its quality and sustainability. The industry is rightfully a flag-bearer for our nation and this morning’s hustings was an important opportunity to outline the Welsh Conservative’s positive plans on how best to support our producers.
“The pandemic has exposed the vulnerabilities of our current food system, and shown that our nation’s producers and farmers are open to a disproportionate share of risks. This is why the Welsh Conservatives would plough ahead with proposals to champion Welsh food, under our fantastic five-point plan.
“Under this plan, the Welsh Conservatives would introduce a comprehensive food and farming policy, which would ensure food security and promote the procurement of Welsh food for the domestic market. We’d also take steps to assist with exports, ensuring that our producers are better places to compete in this global market.
“I have also been a strong proponent of plans to introduce a Local Food and Drink Charter, so as to encourage our nation’s shops, cafés, and restaurants to sell locally sourced Welsh produce. After all, there is no better way to support Welsh produce than for all of us, the people of Wales, to buy Welsh!”
