More than half a million people have already signed up to volunteer with the NHS, double our original target, demonstrating that the British people are pulling together to support the national effort to combat coronavirus.
- The NHS has asked up to 1.5 million extremely vulnerable people to stay at home to shield themselves from coronavirus for 12 weeks, so it is incumbent on the rest of us to make sure they are looked after during that time.
- We had originally hoped to recruit 250,000 volunteers, but in just two days more than double that number have signed up – over 560,000 people. They will now help to drive medicines to patients, bring people home from hospital and make regular phone calls to people staying aat home who may not have any company.
- Helping vulnerable people is one exception for which people can leave home – but everyone must follow public health advice the rest of the time, by staying home, to protect our NHS and save lives.
