Ynys Môn MP Virginia Crosbie is urging local businesses and young people to get involved in the UK Government’s Kickstart programme after she visited Holyhead Job Centre.
Virginia was told 61 islanders aged between 16-24 in receipt of Universal Credit had been given work through the scheme.
Jobs include trainee bakers, butchers, greenkeepers, administrative roles and project and environmental management. Prominent companies like Magnox are involved.
The £2 billion Kickstart initiative is a six-month work placement with the UK Government paying the wages, National Insurance and pension for 25 hours a week.
Employers can top up the wage and there are grants for employers to set up support and training for people on a Kickstart placement.
Virginia was given the update when she met with the Job Centre’s Service leader Lynne Moore and her team.
“I was really pleased to see how Kickstart is working on the island. It would be good if more employers signed up and more eligible young people came forward so we can link them up and get more people into work,” said Virginia.
“One of the aims of Kickstart is to give young people a chance of getting a foot on the work ladder and it also recognises that young people have had a hard time during the pandemic and need this help.
“For employers it’s a great opportunity to find young talent and have the UK Government help with wages and training.”
