MPs launch inquiry into establishing Wales as a global tourist destination
The Welsh Affairs Committee has today launched an inquiry which seeks to explore the current position of the tourism sector in Wales and the steps the UK Government can take to help promote Wales to the world.
Among the issues to be considered are attracting international visitors to Wales; connectivity and taxation measures to support the tourism sector; and recovery from the covid-19 pandemic through the UK Government’s Tourism Recovery Plan.
Though responsibility for developing and promoting Wales’ tourism sector rests with the Welsh Government, the UK Government oversees areas that impact on tourism in Wales. These issues include pan-UK connectivity, border control and Air Passenger Duty.
Rt Hon Stephen Crabb MP, Chair of the Welsh Affairs Committee, said:
“The coronavirus crisis cost the Welsh tourism sector around £6 billion in 2020, but even pre-pandemic Wales has punched below its weight in attracting visitors from around the world. With the UK Government charting a course towards recovery for every nation in the Union, it is vitally important that we look at how to invigorate the Welsh visitor economy. Through this inquiry, we hope to establish how to support Wales to become the global tourist destination it deserves to be.”

The Committee is inviting written evidence responding to the following questions. The deadline for submissions is Thursday 31st March.
- How attractive is Wales as a holiday destination for international tourists?
- Why is the number of international visitors to Wales comparatively low as a share of the UK total?
- Does Wales have a sufficiently strong “brand” internationally and what more could be done to promote Wales as a holiday destination abroad?
- How has the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the tourism industry in Wales?
- What will be the impact of a return to the 20% rate of VAT from April 2022 for the tourism industry in Wales?
- What would be the potential implications for Wales’ attractiveness to international visitors of a tourism levy?
- What steps are needed post-pandemic for the tourism sector in Wales to recover and grow its international appeal?
- How can the UK and Welsh Governments and bodies like VisitBritain and Visit Wales better work together to make Wales a more attractive destination for international visitors?
- Has the UK Government’s tourism Sector Deal achieved its aims of making Wales more accessible and improving conditions for domestic and international visitors?
- What infrastructure and transport reforms are needed to make it easier for international tourists to reach Welsh destinations and attractions?
- How can Wales increase its share of international tourism while meeting the UK and Welsh Governments’ respective decarbonisation commitments?

ASau yn lansio ymchwiliad i sefydlu Cymru fel cyrchfan twristiaeth byd-eang
Mae’r Pwyllgor Materion Cymreig wedi lansio ymchwiliad heddiw sydd yn ceisio edrych ar sefyllfa presennol y sector twristiaeth yng Nghymru a’r camau y gall Llywodraeth y DU gymryd i helpu hybu Cymru i'r byd.
Ymysg y materion i’w hystyried ceir denu ymwelwyr rhyngwladol i Gymru; cysylltedd a mesuriadau treth i gefnogi’r sector twristiaeth; ac adfer ar ôl pandemig covid-19 trwy Gynllun Adfer Twristiaeth Llywodraeth y DU.
Er bod cyfrifoldeb am ddatblygu a hybu sector twristiaeth Cymru yn perthyn i Lywodraeth Cymru, mae Llywodraeth y DU yn goruchwylio meysydd sydd yn effeithio ar dwristiaeth yng Nghymru. Mae’r materion hyn yn cynnwys cysylltedd ar draws y DU gyfan, rheoli ffiniau a Tholl Teithwyr Awyr.
Dywedodd y Gwir Anrh Stephen Crabb AS, Cadeirydd y Pwyllgor Materion Cymreig:
“Costiodd argyfwng y coronafeirws tua £6 biliwn i sector twristiaeth Cymru yn 2020, ond hyd yn oed cyn y pandemig, nid oedd Cymru yn gwneud cystal â’r disgwyl wrth ddenu ymwelwyr o wledydd dros y byd. Gyda Llywodraeth y DU yn mapio llwybr tuag at adferiad i bob cenedl yn yr Undeb, mae’n hanfodol bwysig ein bod yn edrych ar sut i fywiocáu economi ymwelwyr Cymru. Trwy’r ymchwiliad yma, gobeithiwn ddangos sut y gellir cefnogi Cymru i ddod yn gyrchfan twristiaeth byd-eang fel y mae’n haeddu bod.”
