The UK must break its dependency on oil and gas through small modular reactors says Virginia Crosbie MP
The new All Party Group on Small Modular Reactors (SMR) is set to examine how the UK can break its dependency on oil and gas at its meeting on Wednesday.
The SMR APPG will welcome Penultimate Power UK to its meeting on Wednesday the 9th March 2022. This meeting follows on from a meeting with Rolls-Royce in February who are planning to roll out their SMR’s for electricity generation at locations across the UK.
Penultimate Power UK is focussed on High Temperature Gas Reactor (HTGR) technology, which aims to reduce carbon by replacing fossil fuels in the industrial sector. This inherently safe technology provides heat up to 950C for industrial processes, including the efficient production of green hydrogen.
The Chair of the APPG on Small Modular Reactors (SMR), Virginia Crosbie MP, commented:
“With the events in Ukraine, it is only too clear to many MPs and Peers that the UK needs to break its dependence on oil and gas. With companies like Rolls-Royce offering huge potential in electricity generation part of the equation has to be decarbonising industry.”
“High Temperature Gas technology offers great potential in replacing oil and gas in a wide range of industrial processes. However, perhaps the best use of the technology will be to break down water into its constituent parts yielding a source of green hydrogen.”
“The APPG on Small Modular Reactors is looking forward to hearing what Penultimate Power UK have to offer in their deployment of Japan’s high temperature gas reactor technology here in the UK.”
