Ynys Môn MP Virginia Crosbie will host the Australian High Commissioner at a gala dinner on the island next month in aid of Anglesey Agricultural Society.
Virginia invited His Excellency, the Honourable George Brandis QC to Anglesey following the signing of a free trade deal between Australia and the UK.
Mr Brandis will be on the island on 18th February in Braids Bistro at the Holyhead Golf Club.
The event is a celebration of the UK’s trade and historic ties with Australia and the dinner will highlight the very best produce Wales has to offer.
There will be a raffle and auction with all proceeds going to the society.
“This is a really important night for the island when we are hosting such an important figure as Australia’s most senior diplomat in the UK,” said Virginia.
“He will get to meet farmers and local businesses and taste the very best produce.
“He will also feel the desire we have here in Wales for ever closer links with such a good friend and ally.
“I am really looking forward to the night. It is a special occasion and it shows that Anglesey can play a part in international relations."
According to the Department for International Trade, the UK-Australia trade deal could boost Wales’s economy by around £60 million.
Welsh farmers will benefit from the opportunities to sell their produce in Australia, and Welsh manufacturers could benefit from new procurement opportunities and enhanced business mobility provisions.
Many small businesses will also enjoy greater access to Australia in the future meaning even greater opportunities.
Mr Brandis has had a distinguished career in law and politics in Australia. He was a Senator in the Australian Parliament for 18 years and a minister in the Governments of John Howard, Tony Abbott and Malcolm Turnbull.
He was appointed the UK’s High Commissioner for Australia in 2018 and has played a key role in the UK-Australia trade deal negotiations.
