The UK government has reaffirmed its commitment to at least one freeport in Wales following a question in parliament today by Ynys Môn MP Virginia Crosbie.
Virginia is campaigning for a freeport to be on Anglesey and has already met with major companies like Tratos and Rolls-Royce who want to invest.
Speaking in the House of Commons today, she said: “Time and again, I speak with companies that want a freeport on Anglesey. I want a freeport on Anglesey, and local people want the jobs and local investment that will come with a freeport, but the Welsh Government say and do nothing.
“Will the Minister please urge the Welsh Government to work with me to deliver this game changer in my constituency of Ynys Môn?
In reply, treasury minister Kemi Badenoch said: “I thank my honourable friend for her letters and her continued campaigning for her constituency.
“We are working closely with the Welsh Government and remain committed to establishing at least one freeport in Wales as soon as possible.
“I encourage them to work closely with constituency MPs on that. As in England, specific locations will be chosen in a fair, open and transparent allocation process.”
Speaking afterwards Virginia added: “The UK Government remains committed to at least one freeport in Wales and wants to work with the Welsh Government to achieve it.
“However, nothing changes. There is only silence from Welsh Government ministers on this issue while opportunities for jobs and investment are potentially missed here on Anglesey.
“I will work with anyone I can to achieve a freeport on Ynys Môn. I don’t care about the politics, I only care about jobs, investment and economic growth for the island I represent.”
