Participating in the NFU’s Back British Farming Day initiative, the Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy and Shadow Minister for Climate Change - Janet Finch-Saunders MS – has encouraged residents to buy local produce as a means of “putting money into our rural economy” and supporting our “guardians and custodians of the land.”
Taking place today (Wednesday 15 September), Back British Farming Day is an annual celebration of the contribution British farmers make to growing our food, caring for our countryside and farmed landscapes, and protecting the natural environment for future generations.
Marking the occasion, Janet said:
“On Back British Farming Day I am proud to be backing farmers in Aberconwy and across the country by encouraging all of us to buy local produce reared to enviably high standards and putting money into our rural economy.
“Our farmers are the guardians and custodians of the land, but more than this, they play an absolutely pivotal role in feeding and employing our nation and providing food security.
“With research published at the close of last year rightly emphasising that Welsh agriculture has among the lowest greenhouse gas emissions of comparable systems worldwide, it is abundantly clear that our farmers continue to play a central role in confronting climate change.
“That is one reason why I have been pleased to petition the Welsh Government to immediately end their Wales-wide NVZ; ensure that we do not see a blanket tree planting approach on diversity-rich land; and ensure that real active farmers are supported in producing food and achieving the net-zero aspiration by 2040.
“So, today and each day of the year, let’s celebrate our farmers and recognise the excellent and selfless work that they carry out, regardless of time, weather, or season.”
